January 24th, 2008 will be the premier of Salt Lake City's very first Gold Sprints style indoor races affectionately named Salt City Sprints! The races will take place on a set of Kreitler rollers. This system allows for almost no resistance on the rider, thus allowing them to sprint all out with little holding them back. Your legs do all the work. Racers will compete against their opponent for 250 meters. Your final time will depend on endurance, will and raw power. B ut let us emphasize that this is an event for everyone! All cyclists, no matter what you ride, are welcome! The Sprints are designed to be more of a chance for those who love to ride to get together and warm-up during the bitter cold. Sign-up now!
Roller racing systems have been around for quite some time and the concept of linking them together is certainly not a new one. Which is why we here at Salt City Sprints thought it was high time that someone start throwing some races in the valley! The advantages of using this type of system for indoor races are numerous. For one, racing indoors beats most days outdoors when a storm system has just rolled in. Second, the Kreitler roller system makes pedaling at high speeds a breeze. By using a front fork stand, the rider can pedal as fast as possible while the rear wheel spins freely on the rear rollers. In doing this, the rider can't fall off while sprinting at a furious pace. Go! Go! Go!.
Of course we want this to be a safe event, and with any sort of bicycle activity it is important the rider be safe and understand what they will be doing. Riding fast can be dangerous, and we have taken every nessecary step for those that compete to be safe. After all, it is about going really really fast. When you racing your friend and the clock, give it your all. It's a blood-pumping, sweat-dripping, leg-burning, stomach-churning event. We will project each riders status on a large screen set up behind them in real-time. Although the races are only 250 meters, don't worry. After your first heat, you'll soon realize that you've got some work to do. Your efforts will be sweetly rewarded. We've got plenty of sponsors putting up some wonderful prizes. We will also have great music pouring out of the P.A. system courtesy of one of our fabulous local D.J.s. Cheer for your friends and in the end it's all about having a good time. The Urban Lounge has a full bar and will be able to provide you with beer, liqour or simply a glass of water. Come and enjoy yourself! Again, each competitor's time will be recorded and when all of the races are finished we will announce the winners! Both men and women can compete, old or young (well you actually have to be at least 21) but we will have prizes from Rickshaw Bagworks out of San Francisco, Cyclesmith, Wild Rose, Guthrie Bicycles and many more.
